Group 1 Question- Cats hunt mice for a practical reason-their own survival. What did the Nazis believe was the practical reason for hunting Jews? Why did Nazis deem it necessary to their own survival?

Group 2 Question- Some have suggested that Speigelman's portrayal of people as cats and mice means that humans are nothing but animals. Do you agree with this interpretation? Why or why not?

Group 3 Question- An old saying has it that, while some wait for good luck, others make their own good luck. Using specific examples from the text, explain how this saying applies to Vladek.

Group 4 Question- Support or attack the following statement: "Both Vladek's and Anja's chief character traits were present in them before the Nazis came to power. Their experiences in the camps simply made them more of what they already were."

Group 5 Question- Choose the 3 adjectives that you think best describe Vladek's character and motivations and defend your choices with specific examples from the book.

    Question 3

This saying applies to Vladek because he doesn't wait to act.He doesn't wait for the Germans to come to take him to a place they put out for the Jewish people's protection. He also keeps his family safe and out of harm.

    - Question #3

The saying is an example of how Vladek had to wait for the day he got released from the camps. that same day it was the day him and his wife got married. He knew he was gotta get out that day because the man in his dream told him he would.

    Question 4

Yes, I support the fact that "Both Vladek's and Anja's chief character traits were present in them before the Nazis came to power. Vladek was very resourceful and clever before the war. During the war he found ways to get food and shelter for him and his family. Anja suffered from depression and anxiety before the war and she lost her son Richieu during the war which made her depression worse, and she eventually committed suicide.

    question 4

I support the idea of Vladek and Anja's character traits were present before the war. Vladek had still been smart, made the best of things. Also, Anja had already been a depressed and sad person.

    Question 5

From reading Maus, I discovered that Vladek
is smart when his father-in-law says,"You see, at least there's one smart guy in the family." I also found out that Vladek is not a caring person when Mala said,"He's more attacthed to things than to people!" Lastly, I found out that Vladek is poor when he said,"You and Mala! You both think money grows on bushes. I'll fix it myself."

    Question.5

Three things that describe Vladek in my opinion would first of all be atrractive, he did explain to Artie that he would get alot of girls because he looked like one of the super models of a magazine. He is also what I consider smart because he made right choices while being prisoner of war, he escaped a concentration camp and worked as a Nazi helper, but later on escaped to his relative that lived in Poland. Finally, I think Vladek is helful, he helped Anja out of depression after he escaped the Nazis, And he sort of helped (although they lost) the Polish soldiers when the Nazis invaded their homeland.

    question 4

I support that Vladek's and Anja's characteristics where the same from before the war and as well after and during the war. Vladek was always trying to be a gentleman (which he always was) and never being too upset about things. On the other hand, Anja had always been an intelligent, skinny and a little nervous woman. She once had wanted to kill herself for no reason at all and at the end she ended up commiting suicide. this is how i support the characteristics of both characters.

    Question 1

The Nazis said the Jews were thaking there economy and ruining it, even though it was ruined in the treaty os Versailles, they deemed they were ruining there economy while they had "controll" of it. They thought it was necessary to hunt them down to get the economy back and or "save" it.

    Question 4

I support the statement that both Vladek's and Anja's chief character traits were present in them before the Nazis came to power. Vladek always acts before he thinks. He was this way before the Nazis. For example, when Anja was worried he doesn't even ask her what she wants. He just takes her on vacation. Anja was always a sad, worried person. Before the Nazis, she couldn't even sleep because she was so worried about her son.

Theadjective that i think best decribesvladek'scharacter was that he was very smart because he convinced anja that lucia was just an old girlfriend that liked vladek a lot and did not want him to leave.Second i thought that veldek was brave because when he shot and they shot back he kept on shooting.third veldek was a very religous man because every day he prayed.

    Question 2

I think the portrayal of humans being animals is very accurate. The metaphor makes sense. The cats represent the Nazi organization and are considered the predators. The mice, symbolizing the Jews, are helpless to the power of the cats. The pigs represent the foolish soldiers who follow the cats. These animals accurately symbolize the situations of the groups they represent. In my opinion, Speilgleman's use of animals characters in the book made it much more enjoyable and easier to read.

    Question 1

The Nazis hunted Jews because they wanted all their buisnesses to be goverment owned because after world war 1 the economy of Germany was crushed because of the Treaty of Versallies. They wanted the buisnesses so they can rebuild their economy they basicly did it to help themselves. They deemed it neccesary because they despretly needed money and with barely a chance to trade they couldn't do anything.

    Question#5
One adjective that could describe Vladek is handsome. Vladek is handsome because he would always get all of the girls. He was also smart because he could convince people in a well manner and he could do buisness very well also. The last adjective that could describe Vladek is tiring because he was constantly fighting with Mala and Vladek's son.

    question 2

Yes I agree to Speiglemans portrayal because the cats symbolize as the nazis, the mice symbolize as the jews that are dying from the nazis, and there is more like the pigs are the soldiers or security. This is why I agree with Speiglemans portrayal.

I think when Valdek And Anja are in the concentration camp it changed there characteristics from happy to very sad. I think anja's depression stars acting up also. that's what I think when Valdek and Anja are in the camps how there characteristics are.

I don't agree with the potrayal of humans being like animals because animals really don't think or act logically and we as humans can think logically in order to create things like the internet. Even God said that we are not animals.

  22. Ryan martinez,per.3 group 4: I support the statement because the character traits were within them before the war but the war truly brought them out into the open. For instance, Anja was depressed before the war and would take a lot of pills to drown out her sorrow. After the war, the trauma from that and the depression from childbirth magnified that trait and caused her to commit suicide. Also, Vladek was a hateful person before the war, and even after the war, when he had suffered the effects of other people's racism, he continued being prejudiced.

i think that the person who would be more selfish would be Vladek because he is always telling Artie to stop smoking in his house because it ruins the carpet and that he has to clean up the ashes himself. another reason is because he is very self-centered around his wife. he can be also be very mean to her. so i guess in my point of view Vladek would be the most selfish.
